Though very scenic, this route is not easy; climbers have to go through steep ascents, especially on the day that they have to ascend the Barranco Wall. Machame route is nicknamed “the whiskey route”; indicating that it is a challenging climb compared to simpler routes like Marangu which is nicknamed “the Coca-cola” or “tourist” route. Although it is a difficult climb, Machame has one of the highest climber success rates on Kilimanjaro.
